Done Up is a series of stitched, soft wearables, created from painted and hand block printed cotton fabric. Each element is unique, due to the surface variations of the printing process. These flamboyant pieces can be tied together in different ways, with the potential to contrast colours and patterns, and create a series of overall shapes on the body or on the wall. Ray has drawn inspiration from the energetic repeats of traditional Polynesian bark cloth and the rich history of surface patterns from cultures across the world, in the creation of these playful works. Humans have an innate desire to decorate themselves, both for pleasure and for show. The name Done Up references the way that the elements are actively tied together with long fabric strands, creating different arrangements for any occasion.
